Daniel Bryan
This has undoubtedly been Daniel Bryan’s year and he rightly deserves the title of ‘best in the world’ right now.
He’s never in a bad match and is astute on the microphone, forming a relationship with the crowd which is unrivalled in WWE. He had arguably the two best matches of the year so far, firstly against Bray Wyatt at Royal Rumble, then against Triple H at WrestleMania 30. Bryan then went on to win the WWE title in another sterling effort, triumphing over Randy Orton and Batista in a show closing Mania moment.
The Extreme Rules brawl with Kane had some criticism, but personally, I thought it was quite entertaining for what it was. Unfortunately Bryan has gone out injured since then, but it will take more than a few weeks out to dislodge him from his number 1 status. He’s the best pro wrestler in the world right now, no one is anywhere near matching his status or ability.
When he steps through the ring ropes, Bryan is capable of anything in the ring – brawling, mat wrestling, hard hitting, high flying. The current Champion is WWE’s very finest and his potential is boundless.

Cesaro has made huge strides in 2014, enjoying a creative push which has established him as one of the very top guys. First of all the company dropped his ‘Antonio’ name, then they gave him a win over WWE Champion Randy Orton on Smackdown, then he got the Andre the Giant trophy and finally Paul Heyman as a manager. All that investment has paid off, Cesaro looks destined to be a number one contender in the very near future.
For his part, Cesaro has proved an exceptional ring worker. Whoever he is against, whatever the circumstances, he always delivers excellent in-ring action. He’s so good that it simply isn’t possible for him to have a bad match. All his attributes of strength and agility combine to make a style which is truly impressive. Swinging giants round by their ankles, lifting men with ease, Cesaro is truly unmissable when in the WWE squared circle.
The sublime match with Cena on Raw and almost as good match with Orton on Smackdown stand out the most. It proved that not only is Cesaro a great worker, he’s also a main event calibre talent. This a truly special pro wrestler and he fully deserves recognition as the best pure wrestling talent on the roster right now.

Bray Wyatt had two match of the year contenders in succession at the start of 2014. His Royal Rumble encounter with Daniel Bryan was superb, hard hitting back and forth action which elevated both men. The big spots mixed well with athletic transitions in the quieter periods of the match. It really was a textbook example of how an elite worker goes about his business.
Bray followed this up with an astounding effort in the Shield six man battle at Elimination Chamber, proving to be a truly intelligent worker in the ring – he just gets it, he knows what to do and how to do it.
However, Wyatt has since wobbled, it was almost as if he started believing his own hype. He started overselling and overdoing his work to such an extent it has at times undermined his matches. It’s part of the reason why the John Cena feud has fizzled out so badly, Wyatt became too concerned with getting himself over – he plays to the crowd too much.
Nevertheless, even his less memorable efforts are still solid wrestling contests. His microphone work is super confident and he is undoubtedly bound for an even bigger latter half of 2014.

Seth Rollins
Seth Rollins is an in-ring maestro who has stole the show on multiple occasions in the last few months. Whether it’s high flying or mat wrestling, he truly is exceptional.
What’s really boosted Rollins is that he’s improved his microphone skills and is carrying himself better in segment performances. This guy has always been a great wrestler, but just recently he’s really emerged as a great overall performer too. He’s an interesting talker and it looks like he’s bulked up a bit too – suddenly it’s starting to look that Rollins has more singles potential than Ambrose.
Where do we even begin with plaudits about his ring work? The athletic Rollins is always the highlight of the Shield’s matches. He was the best man in February’s Elimination Chamber six man, and also the best man in the Evolution match at Extreme Rules. He has a smoothness in execution and selling which is unrivalled. When it comes to big spots he is in his element: just take a look at the balcony dive at Extreme Rules.

It hasn’t been his most high profile year in WWE, but John Cena still holds star power like no one else. You only need to attend a WWE show to realise those who don’t like this guy are the vocal minority – swathes of people kitted out in his merchandise make up the majority of most WWE shows. Sure you roll through Chicago for a PPV and he’s hated, but roll into a regular town for a regular show and he’s the man people want to see.
Cena’s ring work gets criticised, but more often than not his matches are usually entertaining fare. His February 17th match with Cesaro was a particular stunner, easily in the top five matches of 2014. Even the less interesting clashes against Orton at Royal Rumble and the Elimination Chamber match were still of an ok standard. The same can be said of the Wyatt matches Cena contested, they weren’t great, but they were a decent watch. Cena’s microphone work is similarly inconsistent, he is confident on the stick, but it isn’t always the best delivery. He makes it high on the list mainly because when he does get it right (see the Cesaro match) he is absolutely one of the best in the company.
At the end of the day, most guys on this list would kill to be John Cena, he has the knack of being a star which most guys will never learn. No one works harder than WWE’s franchise star.

The rise of Roman Reigns has been a subtle mixture of creative push and the star’s own actions. He knows how to connect with the crowd, he times his spots right and gets maximum reactions from his delivery.
His biggest stand out performance was at the Royal Rumble. He set a new record for eliminations and by the end of the contest everyone was chanting “Roman Reigns”. He carries himself like a star and is as over as they come. The way he snarls his face, the way he delivers his microphone lines, Reigns just has ‘it’.
In the ring he proved a brilliant part of the exciting Shield vs Wyatt match at Elimination Chamber. He was booked as the main star of the Shield vs Evolution at Extreme Rules, performing with an understanding of how to make himself stand out. The future is really exciting for Reigns and he is one to watch for a mega successful singles run in 2015.

It’s hard to see past Triple H vs Daniel Bryan as the finest traditional wrestling match of 2014 so far. Both men opened WrestleMania 30 in an absolute classic, a contest filled with a hard hitting style and well thought out psychology. The big spots were exhilarating, building into transitions and near falls which had us at the edge of our seat. One excellent match is worth around a hundred average matches, and for having arguably the best contest of 2014 we have to rank Triple H high on this list. Let’s not forget he also took part in another match of the year candidate as part of Evolution vs The Shield at Extreme Rules. Hunter is still a hell of a talent inside the squared circle.
Something else to consider about Triple H is his elite level microphone work. The character work he put on was a key driver of Daniel Bryan’s popularity and helped to advance the most emotional story of the WWE year. Credit where credit is due, whether it was in the ring or on the microphone, Triple H has been absolutely key to WWE TV over recent months.

Dean Ambrose
Dean Ambrose is a consistently reliable in ring worker, also effective on the microphone and character work. However, he’s been overshadowed by the emergence of Roman Reigns and sheer athleticism of Seth Rollins in the last few months. We once looked upon Ambrose as the future star of The Shield but it’s hard to look past Reigns or Rollins nowadays.
Not to take anything away from Ambrose. As part of The Shield he has always been featured prominently on Raw, more often than not in main events. He had the US Title for a very long period, although it meant almost nothing.
When it comes to wrestling he consistently gets in there and puts on an athletic performance, reliable in both execution and selling of moves. The highlight of his year has to be the thrilling Shield vs Wyatt Family match from Elimination Chamber. It was truly epic, a true contender for match of the year, filled with high spots and exciting exchanges.
WWE know that if they need a performer to count on, Dean Ambrose is always going to be a reliable choice.

Fans might call Batista’s return a failure, but the way it ended up, was there really anybody you would call a better heel in the pre-Mania period? More so than Orton he was absolutely the key heel for Daniel Bryan in WWE’s WrestleMania build. Sure the heat was firstly forced upon The Animal, but once he started running with it, he gave a lesson in how to be the number one bad guy. His little mannerisms, facial expressions, microphone delivery… Batista was performing exceptionally as the man we all wanted to boo.
In the ring he has proved effective too. His TV matches were enjoyable. His Mania 30 main event was riveting, as was the action he had as part of Evolution vs The Shield at Extreme Rules. It isn’t fair to say that those matches ended up stellar because of the people he was in against, Batista was a key component in his own right. The Animal has had a solidly performing few months and WWE will really feel his absence once he takes off after Payback.

Randy Orton has spent the majority of 2014 as WWE Champion. If we take 2013 into account as well, Orton is now 10 months into a run in which he has consistently been booked as a main event guy. Whether it was the Cena feud which opened 2014, the Bryan battles, or the Shield rivalry, Orton has been one of the absolute biggest aspects of WWE television.
You wouldn’t describe his in ring work as excellent, but he has certainly been reliably good. He’s equally assured on the microphone and proved an effective foil to accentuate Daniel Bryan’s popularity. Was that because fans genuinely hate Orton or because he’s such a good worker he knows how to get that despised reaction? There’s truth in both those opinions, when Orton looks like he is going through the motions, when he does the methodical stomp for example, that’s a conscious choice to slow things down and irritate the audience. He’s good at what he does in that heel respect, he winds people up.
For sheer volume of decent matches and the excellent Mania 30 and Extreme Rules main events, Randy Orton deserves his place as one of the ten best wrestlers of 2014 so far.
